Ända sedan 'Enders spel' kom ut på svenska för snart femton är sedan har jag ivrigt sett fram emot att nästa del ska komma ut. Det har mer eller mindre alltid varit underförstått att det kommer en fortsättning.
Det är en Sf-författares privilegium att hoppa mellan olika tidrymder, så länge de har en historia att berätta. Ett exempel på detta är Isaac Asimov, som i sin "trilogi" om Stiftelsen till slut skrev en sju-åtta böcker. Han skrev bland annat 'Preludium till Stiftelsen' flera decennier efter den ursprungliga trilogin. Nu med facit i hand kan vi läsa allt i den ordning de utspelar sig och inte i den ordning de skrevs.
Den här boken utspelar sig före och efter första och andra boken i serien om Ender. Men paralleller går att dra till samtliga böcker (inklusive serien 'Ender's shadow').
Den första av de fyra berättelserna handlar om hur Enders far hamnar i Amerika, den andra om hur Enders föräldrar träffas. Allt är delar av en stor plan (lite amerikanskt kanske). Historia nummer tre är ursprungsnovellen till det som skulle bli boken 'Enders spel'. Den avslutande delen utspelar sig efter kriget, när Ender sedan flera år reser med sin syster Valentine. När de kommer till en ny planet är de tvungna att betala skatt, och här uppstår lite komplikationer.
I var och en av historierna introduceras händelser och figurer som i allra högsta grad spelar stora roller i själva böckerna.
Boken fyller sitt syfte om du är tidigare Ender-läsare. Berättelserna är alla sprungna ur lite luddiga passager från serien. En del frågor som tidigare hängt i luften får sina svar.
Dessutom är originalnovellen till 'Enders spel' mycket trevlig läsning. Den är lite tunnare och koncentrerar sig på kriget och innefattar en del andra händelser än vad jag minns från boken. Det var mycket intressant att se grunden till vad som sedan skulle komma, det har ju blivit sju böcker hittills.
Sammanfattningsvis skulle jag återigen vilja säga att den här boken uteslutande vänder sig till de som tidigare har läst de andra böckerna om Ender. Berättelserna behandlar mer eller mindre specifika händelser och det underlättar om ramverket är känt sedan tidigare. Så, läs de andra böckerna först och krydda sedan med den här novellsamlingen.

Also reprinted here is the original landmark novella, 'Ender's Game', which first appeared in 1977.
