                        RISING SONS  # 1 (1964- Summer 1965)
                        ==============================
                        The "seed" for the start of SPIRIT. Cass meets and marries Randy's mom, Bernice, while
                        associated with this group. They play many dates at the "Ash Grove", which is run by
                        Randy's uncle, Ed Pearl. The group is signed to Columbia, but Cass breaks his wrist
                        after recording demos, and is replaced by Kevin Kelley (later to be in THE BYRDS).

                The Red Roosters in '65
                THE RED ROOSTERS (Late 1965 and possibly early 1966)
                ===========================================
                THE RED ROOSTERS formed in response to a talent show held at Chatsworth High School,
                where Jay, Mark and Mike went to school. Naturally, they won the contest! They played possibly
                10-20 gigs total, and recorded at least an unreleased single at GOLDSTAR STUDIOS. The songs
                were "Walkin' The Dog" and "Evolution Mama". Likely other songs were recorded as well.
                Other known gigs were a Halloween dance at Lincoln Jr. High School in Santa Monica, where
                Randy went to school. The band ended when the Cassidy family moved to New York.

                 WESTERN UNION (1966)
                ====================
                With the Cassidy family in New York, Jay, Mark and Mike formed a new band.
                Later, Jay was to record an unreleased solo single of "Close Your Mind"/"Dynamite",
                backed by CANNED HEAT members. This likely included Mark Andes on bass,
                as he was briefly in that group. This single dates likely from early 1967.
                Jay claims the song(s) were "kind of a Scott McKenzie thing" (i.e. "If
                You're Going To San Francisco"). Mark Andes played with the touring
                 band of THE YELLOW BALLOON, but he is not on their album.

                    TANGERINE PUPPETS (1966)
                    =======================
                    While living in Forest Hills on Long Island, Randy played for a short period of time in this group.
                    Other members of the band included Walter Becker (STEELY DAN), John Cummings (Johnny
                    Ramone of THE RAMONES), Tommy Erdelyi (Tommy Ramone of THE RAMONES).
                    Walter Becker has claimed that Randy taught him a lot about playing guitar.
                    It is not certain that everybody was in the same lineup of this band at the same time.
                    The band lasted (without Randy) until the summer of 1967.

                    JIMMY JAMES & THE BLUE FLAMES (1966)
                    ===================================
                     Randy, now known as Randy Cassidy, met Jimi Hendrix in Manny's Music. They played a bit together,
                     and Jimi offered Randy a place in his band. The band lasted for about three months during
                     the summer. Jimi got to calling Randy, Randy California, since there was another Randy in the band,
                     who he called Randy Texas. Obviously, these were the states they came from! When Chas
                     Chandler of THE ANIMALS discovered Jimi and wanted to take him to England, Jimi asked
                     if they could also take Randy as well, to be in his new band. Obviously, since Randy was only 15, this
                     was not going to happen under any circumstances! Jimi arrived in London on September 24th,
                     so one can assume the band lasted up until then. Their set list was mostly covers of "Hey Joe", "Like
                     A Rolling Stone", "Wild Thing", etc., as well as a few originals. One was a song called "Mr. Bad Luck",
                     which Jimi later evolved into "Look Over Yonder" on the posthumous RAINBOW BRIDGE
                     album. Randy also covered it on CALIFORNIA BLUES.

                     SPIRITS REBELLIOUS # 1 (Jan/Mar - Jun 1967)
                    ====================================
                    Returning to California from New York, Randy and Cass form this lineup in January or March,
                    depending on whom you talk to. The black conga player was named Tyrone, but nobody can remember
                    his last name. He was supposedly busted for drugs, and then left the band (for jail?).
                    Bob Arkin was the brother of actor Alan Arkin. The band's name came from the book by Kahil Gibran. Jay and
                    Mark joined after running into Randy & Cass at a "Love-In" in Griffth Park in Burbank, likely on May 27th.
                    Mark quit CANNED HEAT to join, and Jay was the last of the original members to join.
                    Cass remembers the first gig with the "classic" line-up was for a private party on the
                    beach down at the bottom of Topanga Canyon.

                    SPIRITS REBELLIOUS # 2/SPIRIT # 1 ( Jun 1967- Jan 1971)
                    ============================================
                    Around July of 1967, the name evolved to THE SPIRIT and THE SPIRITS,
                    depending on the handbill at the venues they played. The two people most responsible for their signing with
                    Lou Adler's Ode Records were manager Ann Applequist, and Brian Berry, the brother of Jan Berry (of JAN & DEAN).
                    They sign after their second audition for Lou at the "Whisky A Go Go" in Hollywood in
                    August. After four classic albums the band parts ways with Jay and Mark.
                    The last known gig of the original group, other than reunions, was at the "Fillmore East",
                    New York, NY on January 30, 1971.

                    SPIRIT # 2 (Feb. - July 1971)
                    =====================
                    Exact SPIRIT # 2 dates are unknown. Known gigs began in March and lasted into late July.
                    Randy may have been in and out of the group during this time frame, and Arliss left to be replaced by Al
                    Staehely. He was a former bandmate of JO JO GUNNE drummer Curly Smith in a Texas group called PUMPKIN.
                    John and Al reportedly tried to get Randy to rejoin the group, but he wanted to
                    pursue a solo career instead.

                    SPIRIT # 3 (Sept. 1971)
                    =================
                    This line-up played dates during the month of September.
                    Cass thought they sounded quite interesting and "jazzy", but it
                    was a big strain on John to be the only melody instrument,
                    so in came Al's brother John on guitar for the next album and tour.

                   Their first live appearance was in early January.
                   They recorded the FEEDBACK album, and tour into the summer, when Cass quits.

                    ====================
                    First known gigs are in August. John Fine leaves to be replaced by Larry "Fuzzy" Knight.
                    Release KAPT KOPTER AND THE (FABULOUS) TWIRLYBIRDS album. I have found no evidence of
                    any other drummer playing gigs with KAPT. KOPTER other than Cass.
                    Randy subs for a sick Ritchie Blackmore for a DEEP PURPLE gig in Quebec, Canada on April 6, 1972.

                     ==========================
                     Continue to play mostly club gigs in the LA area. Randy and Cass record the original
                     version of the POTATOLAND album for release as the second KAPT KOPTER album.
                     During this tour, Randy played guitar on PETER HAMMILL's "Red Shift", later to be
                     released in his THE SILENT CORNER AND THE EMPTY STAGE album.

                     ==============================================
                     The guys undertake an extensive UK and European tour as SPIRIT,
                     even though they likely legally no longer own the name.
                     The tour ends in mid-May, and an exhausted and sick Randy California
                     exits the band for Molokai. During this tour, Randy played guitar on
                     PETER HAMMILL's "Red Shift", later to be released in his
                     THE SILENT CORNER AND THE EMPTY STAGE album.

                      ====================
                      With Randy gone, Cass and "Fuzzy" continue with a new cast that has come to be
                      known as the "Copy Cat" SPIRIT. The SPIRIT name continues in legal limbo. First known gig is in early July
                      1973. The group does extensive touring off the sudden belated success of
                      SARDONICUS, THE BEST OF SPIRIT, and the single "Mr. Skin", which is a hit in some regional markets.
                      (Top 10 in Cleveland, OH). Donnie Dacus was the original guitarist/vocalist, but he was sacked early on.
                      He was replaced by Steve Edwards, a friend of Scott Shelley. Donnie Dacus went on to tour and
                      record with STEPHEN STILLS and CHICAGO.

                     likely at great expense, from THE STAEHELY BROTHERS. Mark Andes helps them get going again
                     before leaving for FIREFALL. First known tour dates are in October.

                     at "Curtis Hixon Hall" in Tampa, FL on March 2nd. Taking over the hall from
                     ALVIN LEE, who had cancelled (SPIRIT was to be the opening act), they sold out the hall,
                     and financed the recording of SPIRIT OF 76 at local Tampa STUDIO 70. Signed by Mercury Records,
                     they continue touring through the summer. Record the follow-up album, SON OF SPIRIT.

                 SPIRIT # 1 (Reunion # 1) (Aug 1976)
                 ===========================
                 A little known fact is that there was actually more than one reunion concert during this time frame.
                 The first was in San Luis Obispo, CA, and it is likely that there were several shows prior to the
                 infamous August 28th concert at the "Civic Center" in Santa Monica, CA. According to Jay,
                 he thought a permanent reunion was certainly possible until the Neil Young incident during the Santa
                 Monica concert. John Locke was very good friends with Neil, and his producer (and SPIRIT's on two albums)
                 David Briggs. When Randy shoved a reportedly intoxicated Neil Young off stage
                 during SPIRIT's encore, that was all for him. He reportedly left the stage screaming
                 "I will never play with Randy again!!"

                As Randy put it, "the power trio with class" (amen, brother!). What many, myself included,
                consider to be one of the strongest and interesting line-ups other than the original group. Appear on
                German TV on ROCKPALAST on March 4, 1978, and record a live album at the "Rainbow" in London,
                on March 11, 1978. The album is released in three different configurations in late 1978 -
                early 1979. (LIVE; LIVE SPIRIT; MADE IN GERMANY).

                ===========================
                An off-shoot band that Randy was really into, and "Fuzzy" wasn't.
                Tom Hall played guitar on FUTURE GAMES,
                and was a good friend of Randy's, likely from his Hawaii days.
                I know of one gig at "The Rock Corporation" in Van Nuys, CA,
                exact date unknown.

                A very unclear period. Cass remembers at least rehearsing with this unit,
                but is not certain whether they ever played live. It is also possible that Larry "Fuzzy" Knight
                returned until the band imploded in May, with Randy leaving for a solo career.
                Tim Bogert was the former bassist with VANILLA FUDGE, CACTUS and JEFF BECK.

                Jack Willoughby had been a roadie for SPIRIT. When Randy began auditioning for a new band,
                he brought in his friend Steve "Liberty" Loria from Detroit on bass. They open for (at the time)
                ex-DEEP PURPLE vocalist Ian Gillan during a 21 date UK tour. They record a four song demo
                at Kingsway Studios in London on October 31st. Songs recorded were "Thinking Of You"; "You
                Stole My Heart"; "California Man"; and "Song For Laura". While in England, Randy is presented
                with a large petition to release POTATOLAND. The band can get no label support and disband. It
                is possible that Randy did some sort of very short promotional tour with a band including Ian Gillan,
                but I have not been able to discover any conclusive evidence.

                at the A&M Soundstage in Hollywood in December 1982. Originally this was going to be released on an
                audiophile label, but the band was picked up by Phonogram for a four album deal.
                Randy was also signed to a solo deal. The album is released in Europe in the spring of 1984 as THE
                THIRTEENTH DREAM, and in the US as SPIRIT OF 84, with different cover art.
                A short mini-tour plays the West in August 1984, and then Jay, John and Mark have to return to their other
                commitments.

                Due to the unavailability of Scott and Liberty to tour much out of the West Coast,
                Randy and Cass employ professional "pick up" musicians to play bass and keyboards.
                There was a set of two musicians for Mid-West dates, and others for East Coast dates.
                The Mid-West players were Gary Bloom (keys/vocals) and Gordo (bass).
